"Sure enough, the boss battle music blasts full force in the big Tetris room. Everyone is fully healed, in full overdrive mode, and in correct formation -- almost as if someone strong and benevolent were watching over them and helping them along the way."

A moment of internet silence

Gary Gygax, the creator of Dungeons and Dragons, and the father of the RPG has passed away today.

Let’s hope he gets a good initiative roll, wherever he may be. RIP, Mr. Gygax.

  1. Kuriboh Says:

I heard about this earlier. My friends and I had a moment of silence for him.

  2. CTrunks Says:

What? No. No! True Res! True Res! WHY IS NOBODY CASTING TRUE RES ON HIM?!

    ;_;

I’m actually waiting for the bad jokes about botching a Fortitude save to start…

  3. Chiponyasu Says:

Gary invented many of the things we take for granted in RPGs, including console ones. Without him, we wouldn’t have levels or character classes, or even hit points.

D&D was the progenitor that lead to many of the games we player today, including Final Fantasy and all the games inspired from it. The RPG has a video game genre might not exist without him.

There are 32 recaps on this site, counting Hoku. 26 of them are RPGs. It’s very likely that VGR might not even exist without him. Let’s all take a moment of silence for what he’s made possible.

And break it giggling childishly because he died at 69.

  4. AirAce Says:

I used to play that game. ;.; He will live on in the hearts of many nerds.

  5. Albedo667 Says:

Did he drop any good loot? In all seriousness, this is truly some sad news. Let him roll natural 20′s in gamer’s heaven.

  6. Robyn Says:

A friend of mine ran a first-edition DnD module last night in his honor.

Re: bad Fortitude-botching jokes, I’m sure he’d be amused to know just how many people are making them. Talk about a legacy. XD
